Konkurs na dwa stanowiska stypendysty-doktoranta w ramach projektu NCN SONATA BIS 6

We are seeking two highly motivated PhD students with background in animal experimental biology and a general interest in ecological and evolutionary physiology for our SONATA BIS NCN funded project „Age-related heat balance as explanation for age related decline in reproductive output: applying the heat dissipation limit theory on specific animal models”.

  1. MSc in life science (biology, ecology, evolution, zoology or related),
  2. interest in ecology and evolutionary biology,
  3. interest and experience in experimental work with vertebrate animals,
  4. excitement to perform research in an international team,
  5. excitement to perform research in the laboratory and field,
  6. analytical thinking, creativity and high motivation in learning new methods.
  7. good communication skills,
  8. good level of spoken and written English,
  9. students must be accepted as PhD student at Institute of Environmental Sciences JU.

Task description

We will use two avian model species: great tits (Parus major) in the field and zebra finches (Taenyopyga guttata) in the laboratory, and two unique mammalian models: a strain of laboratory mice with ablation of UCP1 and our experimental evolution model system of bank voles (Myodes glareolus) selected for high metabolic rate and unselected controls. We will measure components of the energy budget during reproduction with respect to experimental manipulation of heat dissipation capacity in differently aged animals. The main aim of our study is to test if heat dissipation capacity limit theory is responsible for the known age-dependent decline in reproductive output of small birds and mammals. Successful candidates will have the possibility to perform research in an active group with international co-operations.

Deadline for application 31 August 2017

Form of application: e-mail

Conditions of employment

We offer scholarship for 48 months of 2000 PLN / month.

Additional information

The recruitment and enrollment in the PhD program consists of a three-step procedure.

In the first step, applicant should send CV (academic achievements included, 2 page maximum) and cover letter in English explaining their interest before the end of August. Give the names and email addresses of two people with first-hand knowledge of your skills and past research experience. The application must contain the following statement: "I hereby give consent for my personal data included in my offer to be processed for the purposes of recruitment, in accordance with the Personal Data Protection Act dated August, 29,1997 (uniform text: Journal of Laws of the Republic of Poland 2014 item 1182 with further amendments)". Send your completed application in a single pdf file to the principal investigator: edyta.sadowska@edu.pl.

In the second step of the recruitment procedure comprises of the exams for the PhD program at the Institute of Environmental Sciences at Jagiellonian University. There are two options: standard PhD program (http://www.binoz.uj.edu.pl/dydaktyka/studia-doktoranckie-biologia/o-studiach; registration: https://www.erk.uj.edu.pl/studia/3787/1/s) or PhD Program in Biology in English (http://www.binoz.uj.edu.pl/studia/phd_biology/about-the-studies; registration: https://www.erk.uj.edu.pl/studia/karta/studia_id/4097/tryb_ubiegania/s/nr_naboru/1). The registration through the OAS system ends at 6th of September 2017 and the entrance exam will be between 13 and 20 September 2017.

In the third step, among the candidate accepted as PhD student at Institute of Environmental Sciences JU we will award the scholarship based on regulations about scientific scholarships for young researchers in research projects financed by means of National Science Centre, Poland.
